Proper Sewer Hookup & Dump Station Etiquette: What Every RVer Should Know at Cape Kennedy RV Resort

Sewer Hookup

RV life comes with a unique set of responsibilities, and one of the biggest is properly handling your sewer hookup and dump station etiquette. At Cape Kennedy RV Resort, we want every guest to enjoy a clean, sanitary, and comfortable stay. Understanding the correct way to manage your wastewater connections not only protects your RV—it helps keep the resort safe and pleasant for everyone.

When you arrive at your site, the first step is to level your RV before connecting anything. Once the rig is stable, you can safely access the sewer outlet without stressing hoses or fittings. Taking a moment to check that your equipment is in good condition prevents leaks and the messy problems that come with worn-out seals or cracked hoses.

A proper sewer connection starts with a snug, sealed fit. The elbow connector at the end of your hose should fit tightly into the sewer inlet on your site’s pedestal. If it feels loose or insecure, re-seat it until it sits properly. A tight connection protects both you and your neighbors from odors and accidental spills.

Many new RVers make the mistake of leaving their black tank valve open full-time when connected to sewer. This creates a problem known as “pyramiding,” where solids collect on the bottom of the tank instead of flushing out. The correct method is to leave your black valve closed until the tank is at least two-thirds full. This allows adequate pressure for a strong, clean dump.

Your gray tank, however, can remain open most of the time. Since it handles water from sinks and showers, leaving it open helps prevent backups. Still, it’s a good idea to close the gray tank the night before you plan to empty your black tank. This gives you plenty of gray water for flushing the hose and clearing residue after the dump cycle.

Dump station etiquette is just as important as campsite hookups. When using a public dump station, always prepare your equipment ahead of time so you don’t hold up the line. Make sure your sewer hose, gloves, and fittings are easily accessible. Efficiency helps everyone finish their waste disposal quickly and with less risk of mistakes.

Always secure the dump station lid immediately after connecting your hose. Accidental exposure of the sewer opening can cause unpleasant odors and attract insects. A clean working area shows consideration for the travelers waiting behind you and for the resort staff who maintain the facilities.

Once your black tank is fully emptied, use your RV’s built-in tank flush if available. If you don’t have one, back-flushing with gray water is the next best option. Taking time to rinse the hose afterward ensures it stays clean and reduces odors the next time you use it. Keeping your equipment sanitary is part of responsible RV ownership.

When you have finished dumping, inspect the area around the station carefully. If you spilled anything—even a small amount of wastewater—flush the area thoroughly. Leaving the dump station cleaner than you found it is a standard courtesy and helps maintain health and sanitation throughout Cape Kennedy RV Resort.

Always store your sewer equipment in a separate, clearly marked compartment away from potable water hoses and clean supplies. Cross-contamination is a serious safety issue in the RV world. Good organization and mindful storage practices protect your RV and keep your setup compliant with campground expectations.

At Cape Kennedy RV Resort, we are committed to providing clean, well-maintained sewer connections at every site. But good sewer etiquette is a shared responsibility. When everyone follows proper procedures, the resort stays cleaner, smells fresher, and maintains the high standard of comfort our guests appreciate.

By practicing proper sewer hookup techniques and respecting dump station etiquette, you protect your RV, your fellow travelers, and the environment around you. These simple habits ensure a more enjoyable, sanitary, and stress-free stay—whether you’re here for a relaxing Florida vacation or visiting to catch a rocket launch right across the river.
